Wisdom Was Never Meant
to Stay Inside.
The Name
Hokmah is the Hebrew word for wisdom. In the eighth chapter of Proverbs, Wisdom does not wait in the temple for the learned to find her. She stands at the city gates. She takes her place where the paths meet, at the entrance, where everyone passes. And she calls out. Not to the credentialed. Not to the powerful. To everyone.
We named this organization for her because that is the founding instruction, and we take it literally. The most consequential technology in human history is being governed in rooms most people will never enter, in language most people were never taught. Wisdom belongs at the gates. So that is where we work.
The Work
AI governance is conducted on behalf of most Americans, but not with them. The communities with the most at stake hold the least representation: faith communities, working-class and rural Americans, communities of color. Every transparency rule written so far rests on a single untested assumption, that telling people a system is synthetic is the same as protecting them. We believe that assumption is wrong, and we are building the evidence and the constituency to prove it and to change it.

The Founder
Hokmah was founded by Karen Maria Alston, a strategist and bridge-builder in Washington, DC.
The idea did not come from a lab or a policy paper. It came from watching an entire field talk about the people she loves, her friends, her family, her neighbors, without ever talking to them. Decisions about their lives were being made in rooms they would never enter, in language they were never taught. And nobody seemed to find that strange.
She is not a technical founder, and that is the point. She has spent twenty years as a communications and engagement strategist, building campaigns, advising leaders, and earning trust for institutions across business, government, and community life. Her craft is the one this field is missing: reaching people, no matter their background or their title, and engaging them like they matter. When she saw the gap, she crossed into AI safety deliberately, training through the field's own programs, building active fluency, and founding a working study group on AI research and governance along the way.
The field is full of people who understand the technology and cannot reach the public. It is full of people who can reach the public and do not understand the technology. She built Hokmah because someone had to stand in the middle, and she was already standing there.

How We Carry It
We move slowly at the junctures that matter. Before this work scales, it gets stress-tested, reviewed, and challenged by people we trust to tell us the truth. We treat that patience as a credential, not a delay.
We are radically transparent about what we build, because the systems we are concerned about will never be transparent about themselves. Everything we do can be said out loud, in any room.
And we treat the communities we serve as partners, never as subjects. Their trust took generations to build. We intend to be worthy of it.
